Complicated Christmas mystery
This weekend, starting with today’s Christmas Day movie releases, will be an interesting one at the box office. Three films likely will be in close contention for the top spot. After all of the buzz about “Avatar,” it looks like it’s lined up to have another lucrative weekend, if all of my Twitter buddies follow through with their plans to see it.
Then we’ve got the new releases. “It’s Complicated,” which looks like a silly romantic comedy but stars Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, has been nominated for several Golden Globes. Also, after more than 20 years, a new Sherlock Holmes film, “Sherlock Holmes,” is hitting theaters on Christmas Day. Merry Christmas, mystery lovers. If you don’t have cash for movie tickets because you spent all of your money on Christmas presents, you can get payday installment loans to tide you over.
Christmas Day movie releases
Of course, “Sherlock Holmes” and “It’s Complicated” aren’t the only Christmas Day movie releases. First of all, on Wednesday, Golden Globe nominated “Up in the Air” expands. That film, starring George Clooney, got more Golden Globe nominations than any other movie, with six, including a nomination for Best Picture, Comedy. That film has been slowly expanding for a few weeks, and though I think it’ll be in the Top 10, maybe even Top 5, in box office earnings, I don’t think it’ll crack the top three, thanks to the other heavy hitters.
“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” comes out on Christmas Day, and this one is a bit of a wild card. It’s a Christmas movie for kids that comes out on Christmas, so despite the fact that it looks awful and it got terrible reviews, it’s bound to make money. The question is, how much? Will it be enough to grab a spot in the top three among box office earners? For the sake of my own sanity and hope, I’m going to say no. It will probably end up in the top 10, but the top three, in no particular order, will include “It’s Complicated,” “Sherlock Holmes” and “Avatar.”
“Nine,” which was also nominated for several Golden Globes, expands on Christmas Day, and I think it will end up somewhere in the top 10.
The case for ‘Sherlock Holmes’
“Sherlock Homes” already has a built-in fan base. A lot of people have been talking about and looking forward to this film for a long time. Robert Downey Jr. got a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as the detective. Guy Ritchie is director, Rachel McAdams plays a seductress and Jude Law plays Watson.
“Sherlock Holmes” has already gotten a lot of attention, so it’s sure to pull in some big bucks at the box office.
Here’s where it gets complicated
To me, “It’s Complicated” doesn’t seem like the type of film that would usually make tons of money at the box office. The theme of the divorced couple cheating on their current SOs and falling back in love is one that we’ve seen before. Apparently, though, “It’s Complicated” has managed to put a new spin on it.
“It’s Complicated” was nominated for multiple Golden Globes, including Best Screenplay. It’s tough to determine which film will come out on top, and the fact that it’s Christmas Day weekend throws another wrench in the works. Check back Monday and I’ll fill you in on all the box office action.
