Just how lazy is Coley Laffoon?
When Anne Heche talked about her ex-husband on “Late Night with David Letterman,” she didn’t really have anything nice to say. The most surprising part, for me, was when Letterman asked Anne Heche what her ex-husband’s job is. From The Insider:
Letterman asked his guest what her ex does for a living to which she replied, “He goes out to the mailbox and he opens up the little mailbox door and goes, ‘Oh! I got a check from Anne! Oh my gosh I got a check from Anne!’”
Coley Laffoon and child custody
So Anne Heche, who makes beaucoup bucks as an actress, pays her ex-husband child support. They have a 7-year-old son together who lives with Coley Laffoon full time. So that seems fair. I don’t honestly have a problem with the idea of a man devoting all of his time to taking care of his kid.
Anne Heche makes it sound like her ex-husband would be left seeking debt settlement relief if he didn’t get his child support checks. But it turns out that Anne Heche’s ex-husband Coley Laffoon does have a job — a pretty good one.
Coley Laffoon’s real job
Turns out, Anne Heche’s ex-husband Coley Laffoon works for Los Angeles real estate company Hilton & Hyland, according to Us Magazine. He told the magazine:
“After coming home from showing two different clients two different condominiums, I was disturbed to see Anne taking out her personal frustration on the father of her child on national television.”
Coley Laffoon sells real estate in L.A.? Something tells me he and his kid wouldn’t be starving if he weren’t getting checks as Anne Heche’s ex-husband.
Turning the tables
I just can’t help feeling like this situation has some underlying sexist undertones. Most of the headlines read “Anne Heche calls ex-husband a lazy ass.” If a wealthy actor who was paying his ex-wife child support — whether she had a job or not — went on a late-night talk show, I would certainly think he would have the sense not to call his wife lazy and say that her only job was opening the mailbox.
Women who accept child support payments from their ex-husbands are considered strong and smart and powerful. They’ve gotten their way. It bothers me that Anne Heche is painting this man as lazy while he is taking care of their son and holding down a decent job. I am sure Anne Heche had perfectly valid reasons for divorcing Coley Laffoon, but what does she want from him? I have seen lazy, Anne Heche, trust me. And a guy with a job and a kid full-time? That ain’t it.
Coley Laffoon on ‘public bullying’
I have to say, I don’t know anything more about Coley Laffoon than the stuff that I have already written. I had never even heard of him until today. He could be a huge scumbag for all I know, but I have to agree with him on this:
“I wish Anne Heche could see that public bullying isn’t good for the soul or positive for her child. It’s mean.”
Yeah, hearing your mom badmouth your dad on TV cannot be good for a kid. Even Kate Gosselin manages to be respectful when talking about Jon, and I think that’s because she’s trying to do what’s best for her kids.
